Single Mom's Group
Gail Showalter – SMORE for Women, Beaumont, Texas
What does SMORE stand for?
After raising three children as a single mom for sixteen years I realized the deep need for favorable attention from others. As a Christian I’m convicted that we are called to have a blessing strategy. SMORE™, is an alliance of compassionate women whose goal is Single Moms :: Overjoyed, Rejuvenated, and Empowered!
We have developed and implemented a model for hosting DAYs of Blessing for single moms. Each DAY that is hosted focuses on one of the SMORE themes which include: Personality Predicaments, Money Matters, Bonding with Family Fun, Setting Boundaries, Job Jump Starts, Dating Do’s, Nutrition and Manners Matter, and Grieving a Loss.
Our DAYs have proven to be extraordinary in several ways.
• We provide a day the moms will never forget, filled with just what the mom needs but seldom receives.
• Our hostesses are equally amazed at the joy they get from the entire process.
• Donors are made more aware of the need of single mothers and their children.
• The trickle-down effect seeps throughout the community.
• And the church fulfills the work of the kingdom.
After being a guest, Lana, states, “I am overjoyed to have been part of the Single Mothers’ DAY of Blessing. This event was truly a blessing to me. This was a day that I will never forget. I felt so refreshed, revived, and renewed.”
Another mom, Sheri, says, “This has been a very uplifting experience for me and will have lasting benefits on my life as a single mom. I am so grateful for everyone’s generosity, care, and support. It was a blessing to spend a day with others that I had so much in common with. It was so refreshing to be catered to. The food and relaxing music were great. I enjoyed every moment of it. I am thankful to have had this opportunity!”
Scripture is filled with the message that we are to care for the less fortunate. Originally the terms ‘orphan’ or ‘fatherless’ in scripture meant “to be lonely” or “bereaved.” These were the unprotected classes of the times. In our times single mothers who are struggling to provide a loving home for their children, often with no child support and very little income, could certainly be considered lonely and bereaved.
A SMORE™ DAY of Blessing is just one way to reach out and share Christ’s love with others.
